Clint Eastwood Sees Dead People

If you were a spirit, would YOU talk to Matt Damon?!

If you were a spirit, would YOU talk to Matt Damon?!

Hereafter

starring Cecile De France, Jay Mohr, Richard Kind, Matt Damon, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Bryce Dallas Howard

directed by Clint Eastwood

Ask the question “What happens after you die?” and you’ll get a dozen different answers, depending on who you ask. Its one of those questions that has no one definitive answer for the collective public; it really boils down to what each one of us believes. Clint Eastwood’s new film Hereafter does not attempt to answer this question, but rather explore the notion of an afterlife and the effect it has on a few souls among the living.

RED

starring Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, Karl Urban, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Brian Cox, Helen Mirren, Richard Dreyfuss

directed by Robert Schwentke

I love when a graphic novel is given the chance to get a movie treatment. Sure, some of the material gets lost in the translation, but it sheds light on a writing medium that gets little attention. No, I’m not talking about super hero comic book movies; those are everywhere. I’m talking about the little six issue original series packed with intriguing stories about characters that haven’t been established for fifty years. RED, by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, is the latest graphic to get its chance on the big screen.

What a Bunch of Jackasses.

Knoxville seems to have this thing about getting rammed by bulls. Maybe he should have been a rodeo clown.

Jackass 3-D

starring Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, Steve-O, Jason Acuna, Preston Lacy, Chris Pontius, Ehren McGhehey, Dave England, Tony Hawk, Spike Jonze, Seann William Scott, Mike Judge

directed by Jeff Tremaine

Have you been deprived of your regular dose of being able to see a bunch of idiot daredevils do overly complicated and at times sickening stunts for your viewing pleasure? Well my friends, leave it to Johnny Knoxville to deliver. Come on, did you really think there wouldn’t be a third installment?

Van Wilder: Six Feet Under

If you're not claustrophobic before, you will be afterward.

If you're not claustrophobic before, you will be afterward.

Buried

starring Ryan Reynolds

directed by Rodrigo Cortes

I would have loved to be at the table when this was movie was pitched: here’s an idea; let’s put Ryan Reynolds in a box, bury it…and see what happens. The mere mention of being buried alive makes me cringe, and if I wasn’t claustrophobic before seeing the trailer, I am now. But rookie director Rodrigo Cortes’s project caught my attention and made me curious; what do you do after you wake up and find out you’ve been nailed into a wooden box?

…Kinda.

Zach Galifianakis in a mental hospital? Makes sense.

Zach Galifianakis in a mental hospital? Makes sense.

It’s Kind of a Funny Story

starring Keir Gilchrist, Lauren Graham, Jim Gaffigan, Zach Galifianakis, Aasif Mandvi, Emma Roberts

directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck

It’s an understatement to say that Zach Galifianakis has blown up since The Hangover. He’s every where, with both full roles and cameos in film and television; and to his credit, most of it is pretty good. Knowing his stand-up comedy beginnings and his string of hit comedy flicks, I’ll admit its a bit of a surprise to see him take on a role in a dramedy. Namely, It’s Kind of a Funny Story. But hey, who doesn’t love a good story about patients in a mental ward? One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest anyone?

Facebook Me.

Is he Mark Zuckerberg when he's awake...and Tyler Durden when he's asleep?

Is he Mark Zuckerberg when he's awake...and Tyler Durden when he's asleep?

The Social Network

starring Jesse Eisenberg, Rooney Mara, Armie Hammer, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Rashida Jones

directed by David Fincher

Let’s admit it up front; online social networking has become integral in our everyday lives. People spend hours upon hours daily chatting online, updating statuses, uploading pictures…you name it. If you have access to the internet, its more than likely you are a member of one of the many social websites; the foremost of those being Facebook. Facebook revolutionized social networking, and made creator Mark Zuckerberg a billionaire; but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The rest of the story lies in the capable hands of director David Fincher.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Hey mom, this is my new friend. Can she have some blood?

Hey mom, this is my new friend. Can she have some blood?

Let Me In

starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, Chloe Moretz, Richard Jenkins, Cara Buono, Elias Koteas

directed by Matt Reeves

With the recent explosion in popularity of vampires, it seems Hollywood is hard pressed to go more than a few months without making another movie about blood suckers. This then begs the question: Why go see this particular vampire flick? What makes Let Me In any different than the rest? Well, two things. One, it doesn’t hurt to have the visionary director of 2008’s Cloverfield at the helm. Two, my new golden standard: any film starring Chloe Moretz is worth the price of admission.

This…Is…Ga’Hoole!!!

These owls might as well be from the PG version of Sparta.

These owls might as well be from the PG version of Sparta.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole

starring Essie Davis, Joel Edgerton, Ryan Kwanten, Helen Mirren, Sam Neill, Richard Roxburgh, Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving, David Wenham

directed by Zack Snyder

Zack Snyder is known mostly for his hard hitting R-Rated flicks such as 2006’s Dawn of the Dead remake, 300, and The Watchmen. All solid, very much worth seeing movies in my book. So it is a bit odd that his most recent work, Legend of the Guardians, is a PG animated film about owls. Its a move that is definitely unexpected for the successful director, but then again, these are helmet-wearing warrior owls. Maybe its not too far off his mark after all.

Autumn Music

Not to many days ago Autumn began, and if anyone has ever talked to me about music, at any length, they know that I believe music is seasonal. I believe at the deepest core of us, in the parts that remember we were once children of the moon and sun, we are seasonal as well.

Apparently Greed IS Good.

small

Shia LaBeouf is now a hybrid of Indiana Jones and Gordon Gekko. Yikes.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

starring Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, Josh Brolin, Carey Mulligan, Susan Sarandon, Frank Langella, Charlie Sheen

directed by Oliver Stone

I guess it makes sense with the last two years of the United States’ economic woes that a film such as Wall Street would become relevant once again. Oliver Stone’s classic manifesto on corruption and greed still rings true twenty three years later. But whatever happened to Gordon Gekko, and what would he do in the current economic climate? Well, Michael Douglas gets the chance to play his Academy Award winning role once again in Stone’s first ever sequel: Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.
