She’s Out of My League

starring Jay Baruchel, Alice Eve, T.J. Miller, Mike Vogel, Nate Torrence, Adam LeFevre, Geoff Stults

directed by Jim Field Smith

After a few years of playing back up to some of the premiere comedic talents of film today, Jay Baruchel finally got his leading role. You loved him as Ben’s fellow illegal immigrant from Canada in Knocked Up, and who can forget the only actor who read the screenplay in Tropic Thunder? Its about time someone gave him the chance to be the leading man in a movie; he is definitely more than capable. In my mind, he’s a more talented and diverse sort of version of Michael Cera. Agree or not, but the trailer for She’s Out of My League had me interested from the get go.

Kirk (Baruchel) is a member of TSA at the airport in Pittsburgh with his buddy Stainer (Miller). One day, Molly (Eve) passes through airport security and leaves her phone. She calls it from a friend’s phone and Kirk answers. She asks him to meet up with her a few days later to return the phone. Molly ends up inviting him to an art gallery, a hockey game, and eventually out to dinner. This shocks Kirk and his friends, mostly because Molly is what they would refer to as a solid 10, while Kirk only ranks in at a 5, or what his buddy’s describe as a Moodle; a man/poodle. After over analyzing this whole convoluted ranking system, Kirk doesn’t understand why Molly is interested in someone like him. He’s got to overcome his own anxiety, while Molly turns out to not be quite as ‘perfect’ as everyone thinks she is.

She’s Out of My League starts off really slow and just as awkward as the character of Kirk himself. But it picks up speed, and it turns out that all the good jokes aren’t in the preview, and you find yourself laughing out loud quite often. Sure, it follows the standard love comedy formula: boy meets girl, girl or boy has some other motives/self esteem issues, they have a falling out, some how they end up together by the end. The climax is even at an airport for crying out loud. But what makes even the formula romance comedies stand out is the good one liners, and comedic situations in between. Smith really directed a solid flick here, and even managed to work in a few good concepts of how we as people view ourselves. If the film has a theme, it would be that someone can only love you as much as you love yourself; and I feel that it tackled the subject pretty well.

Jay Baruchel is always a pleasure. He took the reigns of the leading man and did quite well. Hopefully this role will lead to better and bigger things for the guy because I’ve yet to get tired of his acting style. And then there’s the beautiful Alice Eve. She’s the daughter of famous Brit actors, and her first big movie role was only last year in the Ray Liotta and Harrison Ford flick Crossing Over. She’s still got a long way to go to prove that she has acting chops; her role in She’s Out of My League was very singular and one note. But granted, that’s really all the script called for, and she pulled it off pretty well. The stand out, however, has to be T.J. Miller as Kirk’s best friend Stainer. Every other word out of his mouth was something worth chuckling over; I can honestly say that the film would not have been worth seeing if not for the genius delivery in which Miller portrays Stainer. Look out for this guy in the future.

All in all, get out and see She’s Out of My League becauseĀ its totally worth it. Just leave the kids at home; there’s a whole lot of sexual innuendo going on here. The movie does not give us anything we haven’t seen before, and isn’t overly original, but it shines in the follow through. Good laughs and good fun equal a good movie, no matter how you look at it. I just hope that more filmmakers give these young actors and actresses more opportunity in the future; the cast of the film, with a little more experience, could be the next generation of funny people in the movie making industry.
