Like Moby Put It: On to the Next

The Doctor talks about the year in music and about things to come.  Gather around the campfire, children, it’s time to listen to the wisdom of the one they call RABBITFOOT.  Or the Hulk will eat you.

l_ae28230da0234a008dc7345160bc66dfAfter much musing and looking and thinking, I thought to myself maybe a year-end greatest hits review, or the much feared decade’s greatest;  then I thought no way can I do this.  This review would have to be like any good review; to do it right there has to be other reviews to look through to see the best and worst parts.  So here I am, thinking this is a clean slate for the decade/year.  This is very good for me since my world is changing and I should change with it… look me up on Facebook, people!

So on to the next.  Still, this is about music, and so I would like to appreciate some of the music last year, but not to the extent a year-end review would be.  Here’s to the site: may it grow and go, and may all of KevtheStampede’s wishes of power, money, and women come true!

Some ‘o9 shout outs:

Of course you have the Jay Z and Kid Cudi albums that were very good for a moment.

My ever- growing fascination with that strange Lady Gaga.

Them Crooked Vultures’ “Reptile” is still big in rotation, and others will follow I’m sure, but I cannot get over that tune.

Willie ISZ’s Georgiavania is probably the Best Rap Album of the Year.  “I didn’t mean to…” is not a rap track but still gives me the good vibes when I listen to it.  “Blast off” is how rap should be done.

Dan Auerbach always makes me happy. I cannot listen to the Black Keys straight through; I have to let them come up and surprise me.  But his solo album, beginning to end, just flows better.

Then there’s the Wolfmother album.  After their brilliant start, I wondered how they would do on their sophomore album, especially after all the issues they had internally.  They made it through, and not only that, but they made all the right decisions. My biggest albums though- the ones I still am listening to in the disk changer- or what I guess you can call the winners of the late season, are:  U2, Tom Waits, and the Eels.

U2 is only here because of the concert I saw in Houston, TX.  That concert gave me an appreciation for the cd like I don’t know, but I am enchanted by that album.  And that concert: it was everything I could hope for in a U2 concert, minus “Bullet in a Blue Sky”.

Tom Waits‘ Glitter and Doom was and is amazing and so aptly titled that I had to laugh in joy as I listened to it through the first, second, and third times.  A Tom Waits live show is something I am going to make my goal in life for a moment.

The Eels Hombre Lobo is still Wow! “Fresh Blood”: I scream that song.  I love the others, but I scare drivers when I listen to that track.

So two last things before I depart:  Firstly, I saved the Grizzly Bears for this moment, because with it, you get Department of Eagles and Monsters of Folk- all very amazing and textured and listenable and beautiful music for music listeners; listen if you have not.  Secondly, thank you to Stephen King, Entourage, and the gods; they all gave great music this year: James McMurtry, Tom Rush, Parlor Mob, Animal Collective, 16 Horsepower. And finally, Paul McCartney’s Flaming Pie album. It has been a good year.

On a final note, out this week, or at least out and listened to by myself, is Ok Go’s Of the Blue Colour of the Sky.  It’s a fun album; tracks like “WTF?” and “White Knuckles” hit me like good Prince, I’ll keep these in play for a couple.  “Back From Kathmandu” is good alternative pop, but other than those three tracks, I feel like the album is redundant in its production and writing- not to say that’s a bad thing, just not mine.

So next week, around Thursday, I’ll see y’all back round here for Spoon and the Eels. Take care!

I must say, Dr Rabbitfoot has got the cure for the cancer that is no-music-itis. He introduced me to the Black Keys, rubbed me down with a lil bit o’ Kid Cudi, slathered on some Eels, stuck a Spoon on it, then sent me away with a prescription for some Crooked Vultures, and I swear I can lift more weight, run farther, and smoke more cigarettes (one side effect however: I think I’ve begun lactating)! If the Dr can help me, I know he can help you!
