The King of Iron Fist Returns!!!

tekken6_box_front_PS3I have to say that I am an unabashed fighting game fanatic. Everything from Street Fighter to Virtua Fighter, I love them all. And out of all of these games, Tekken holds a special place in my heart, as it was the one to bring me into the fighting game fold.

Sadly, the days of going to the arcade with your weekly allowance are pretty much over. But fret not, fighting fanatics! This generation of consoles lets you fufill your need to beat the snot out ouf random strangers with their focus on online play. Now, Tekken has FINALLY entered the fray with the release of Tekken 6 on both the Xbox 360 and the Playstaion 3 (of which this review is based on).

First and foremost, this game is fun. The combat is nice and fast, with responsive controls that can either make or break a fighting game. The online portion of the game is pretty much the most seamless that I have seen in any fighter to date. With it, you pretty much have a real human opponent at the push of a button. This is a feature that will keep me coming back for a long time The roster of characters is probably the biggest I have seen in any Tekken release, with all the fan favorites such as Jin Kazama and Marshal Law returning.

But, for as long as this game has been delayed, I do have to say that I am a little disappointed with the graphics in this game. Not that it is ugly or anything, it just looks like it would have been a little more impressive early on in this generation of consoles. The action does however scream along at a very nice frame rate, which is important to the timing you have to pull off on some of the more intricate moves. Also, one thing that really kind of took me by surprise is the quality of flowing clothing in this game. Unlike other fighting games released this generation, there arent the clipping problems with hair and clothes, causing jackets to mysteriously poke through the fighters legs.

The sound in this game is great. The soundtrack is typical standard fighting game fare, with evertything from generic dance music to the “epic” final battle theme. Where it really shines though is with the actually fighting effects. Every punch and kick sounds devastating and makes you really feel like you are ringside.

The main thing however that keeps this game from true greatness is the fact that it feels like it never really moved forward from any of the previous versions. The addition of the online mode is great, but it’s almost a given at this point in the game. The Campaign Story mode is a laughable attempt to try to give the game more depth. And as much as I like it, the fighting system is pretty much the same thing from the previous five entries. I’m not saying that it needs a complete overhaul, but introducing one new mechanic could have gone a long way in this game, especially as much as it was delayed.

Overall, Tekken 6 is a fun fighting game that is more like a trip down memory lane that a whole new game. It will keep rabid fighting fans entertained until the next new thing, but I can see the casual pugilist getting bored rather quickly
