I wasn’t sure if this should go under guest reviews because I’m not the tunes doctor, but move over, Dr. Rabbitfoot, because it’s starting to sound a lot like fall.
With the autumn solstice comes cooler temperatures, layers of fall colors, and a laid-back music attitude. Fall is a great season for holidays, campouts, and down here in Texas, it’s festival time- yee haw!
Nostalgia creeps back in song form around this time for me. One of my most vivid festival memories from way-back-when is the year me and my friends stood in line for the fair rides and bopped around to Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise.” To this day, that song pops into my head at the very sight of a ferris wheel.
More adult themed festivals come around this time of year like Oktoberfest and, of course, Halloween. I’m a rock ‘n roller at heart, so if I’m throwing back a pint of lager (which I never do), I’d like to do it to some Rob Zombie. “Superbeast” is my personal favorite but who can say no to an insatiable “Living Dead Girl?”
Halloween is my very favorite holiday, and the usual crop of Halloween songs are nostalgic in themselves like “Superstition” by Mr. Wonder and “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell.
Cooler weather brings out the camper in me as well, and sitting around a campfire brings to mind the deep earthy voices of Chris Cornell and Zakk Wylde. Roasting marshmallows is always more kickass with Audioslave’s “I am the Highway” crooning in the background from a pickup truck’s dash radio or Black Label Society’s “Blessed Hellride” piped in from a flashlight-slash-FM radio-slash-can opener.
Chilly days make for the laziest ones and the world seems to slow as well during fall. Soft chill music accompanies the kicked-back atmosphere, and emo bands like Stain’d and Blue October seem ripe for the picking. Need a mid-fall pick-me-up? Try on “Beautiful” by Under the Influence of Giants (the most underrated unknown band EVER) and try to not shake your ass; it’s infectious.
Now I don’t pretend to have as sophisticated a music palette as the Dr., but my top three songs of fall are as follows:
“Come in Closer”- Blue October: It just feels like fall- cold, dark, and a bit haunting.
“Jackolantern’s Weather”- 311: The lyrics are perfect for fall and it’s a great head-bobbing tune.
“Thriller”- Michael Jackson: My pick for THE song of fall, made even more poignant by the King of Pop’s recent departure from the building.
This is only the beginning. This list is open to the public, so come on, tell me what YOUR favorite fall songs are- I know you’ve got something to say!
