Jeremy Piven is a master of the craft. Doesn’t matter if he’s taking on a serious role or something really stupid, he puts on quite a show. It makes sense that he would eventually come into the fold with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, who are producers for this film. They’re known for being modern pioneers of comedy, and Jeremy Piven has successfully portrayed one of the most memorable leading roles of comedy since Ferrell’s Ron Burgundy from Anchorman. No really, I’m serious.

Don ‘the Goods’ Ready (Piven) moves cars, mother f**ker. At least that is what his business card claims. Don is what they call in the car industry a mercenary; he blows into town for a weekend, sells a ton of cars, then moves on. He travels with his band of cohorts; Jibby Newsome (Rhames) who has had a ton of sex but never really made love to a woman, Brent Gage (Koechner) who is loyal and good with numbers, and Babs Merrick (Hahn) who is highly sensual and answers when somebody calls for people with ’swinging dicks.’ These four are a powerhouse of car salesmanship. They are called to pull Selleck motors out of a slump that could bankrupt the business. They have the fourth of July weekend to sell every car on the lot; but Don is running from his past. A long lost son, the fear of settling down, and the death of a friend may throw Don off this game no matter how much of the ‘goods’ he’s got.

All acting is what you’d expect from a comedy, but Jeremy Piven is head and shoulders above the rest. He is convincing as the cocky and sleazy Don Ready, yet can make the man dark when need be. The best part of his performance is the speeches. Don Ready is supposed to be able to sell anything, and when left in the hands of a giant like Piven, its as if he could break the fourth wall and sell the audience one of those clunkers right then and there. I’d love to see Piven in a half way serious role; one day he could easily be a shoe in for an oscar if he picked the right role.

The best way to describe the movie, in my opinion, is through the numerious one liners. Don Ready tells everyone to wear some tight underwear, because he’s going to give a boner speech. In reference to airport security, Babs Merrick says that they made her breast feed an old man. McDurmit tries to save himself from a fall by cushioning himself with a purple dildo. Jibby proclaims during an episod of Dawson’s Creek, “James Van Der Beek, my nigga!” Brent Gage claims breakfast doesn’t taste the same when he doesn’t have it at a strip club. And people, this is just tipping the iceberg.

Plus, this movie contains what I believe to be the best Will Ferrell cameo since The Wedding Crashers. Seriously funny.

If sexual references and jokes don’t bother you, go see this film. If you hold a strong love for Jeremy Piven, go see this movie. If you’ve been looking for the same high in a movie that you got during Anchorman, go out now and see this movie. If you’re easily offended, yeah, just don’t go. I’ll be buying it on Blu-Ray, for sure. I don’t understand why this movie has gotten so many other bad reviews. I guess some people just can’t appreciate a good ’stupid’ comedy when they see one. But you’ve got to understand, anything that comes from Ferrell and McKay is going to be ’stupid’ comedy; and if they are on their game, its stupid comedy at its best. Such is The Goods.
