A Modern (Complicated) Family

The real question is whether or not the parents will be all right.

The Kids Are All Right

starring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutcherson

directed by Lisa Cholodenko

There’s nothing quite like a good Dram-edy; they’ll keep you laughing all the way through, but still leave room for a solid catharsis before you walk away. There’s definitely nothing wrong with having a little fun while making a point. Throw in Academy Award Nominees Annette Bening and Julianne Moore, and you’ve got a buzz worthy independent film. There’s much too few of these as of late.

Piranhas…on a Boat…in 3D

Blood, Gore, and Nudity. In 3D. Disgusted, or intrigued?

Blood, Gore, and Nudity. In 3D. Disgusted, or intrigued?

Piranha 3D

starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ving Rhames, Elisabeth Shue, Christopher Lloyd, Eli Roth, Jerry O’Connell, Steven R. McQueen, Kelly Brook, Adam Scott, Riley Steele

directed by Alexandre Aja

Upon first seeing the trailer for Piranha 3D, my jaw dropped and I wondered at how anyone could finance such an obvious piece of crap, much less pay for a movie ticket to see it. However, my motto is that you can’t trash the flick until you’ve seen the flick. Piranha 3D has two things going for it: it’s a remake of the Roger Corman cult classic, and director Alexandre Aja has already successfully remade a horror flick in 2006 with The Hills Have Eyes. Honestly, this flick could go either way.

An Epic in all its 8-Bit Glory

There should be an 'Evil Exes' prenump for all relationships.

There should be an 'Evil Exes' prenump for all relationships.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

starring Michael Cera, Alison Pill, Johnny Simmons, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Hader, Clifton Collins Jr., Thomas Jane

directed by Edgar Wright

The name Edgar Wright is nearly synonymous with truly great Brit humor. I mean, if you’ve never heard of Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, you’ve been living under a rock for the last six years. So it seems a bit odd that Wright’s third major film is based on the six volume graphic novel series about a young Canadian slacker called Scott Pilgrim. Its not set in England, its not an original screenplay, and it doesn’t star Simon Pegg; Scott Pilgrim is unlike anything Edgar Wright has attempted before. Should be interesting.

Maximum Testosterone

Who knew they could fit this much kick-ass into one movie?

Who knew they could fit this much kick-ass into one movie?

The Expendables

starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Charisma Carpenter, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis

directed by Sylvester Stallone

Let’s face it; action films have lost their luster in the last ten years. None of the new action stars have been able to recapture the former glory of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Norris, Seagal, or Van Damme. So, for Sly to take it upon himself to gather as many big names as he can muster and make the ultimate action film is in fact a very bold move. It has potential to be stellar, but it also has potential to be very, very bad. Can Stallone bring what made the action genre great into the twenty first century?

Buddy Cop Flick FTW!

Sure, Marky Mark has done well. But whatever happened to the Funky Bunch?

Sure, Marky Mark has done well. But whatever happened to the Funky Bunch?

The Other Guys

starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Rob Riggle, Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan, Ray Stevenson, Eva Mendes

directed by Adam McKay

It’s actually surprising that no one thought to act on this sooner; Will Ferrell in a buddy cop movie? Excellent idea. Have over serious and over confident Marky Mark Wahlberg play his partner? Even better. And sure, though its no surprise that Adam McKay is involved, the director of Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, and Anchorman is perfectly capable of bringing the funny. Consider me sold, and consider me stoked.

Dinner For Schmucks

starring Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Jemaine Clement, Stephanie Szostak, Lucy Punch, Bruce Greenwood, Ron Livingston

directed by Jay Roach

And so the long line of unoriginal movie making for Summer 2010 continues with Dinner For Schmucks, the latest comedy from the man who brought you the Austin Powers trilogy as well as Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers. It takes its premise from the modern French classic The Dinner Game, and Jay Roach gives it an American twist. Turns out it doesn’t hurt having two of Hollywood’s leading funny men on the bill, either.

Salt…But No Pepa.

Her mission: to season all bland foods everywhere!

Her mission: to season all bland foods everywhere!

Salt

starring Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor

directed by Phillip Noyce

The hurried noise of a crowd. Massive explosions. An impossible, death defying leap. Gun fire, followed by returned gun fire. High speed car chases. These are the corner stones of any good Action Summer Blockbuster worth their weight. Sure, we need meaning-filled dramas and light hearted comedy, but nothing gets you amped up like a no holds barred action flick. This week, its the director of Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger who will offer up the adrenaline pumping thrills.
